I am sure most of you have heard about the new movie that opens this Friday, "The Golden Compass." Most of you have probably received e-mails speaking out against the movie. I did not get any of those e-mails, but my wife did and her Mom had done some research on the upcoming film. We began to talk about this movie (created after the books) and I was shocked to her the anti-Christian themes in the book. I am not going to go into great detail about it because I have a great link that will lead you to many articles that will allow you to examine the content for yourself. Here is the link: http://thepoint.breakpoint.org/2007/11/a-golden-compas.html
Well I hope you spend some time reading about this. Let's take a stand. We can abstain from going and inform friends and family that our money this Holiday Season can certainly be better spent.

There are most certainly better ways for someone to spend their money than go see this movie, but there are certainly many many movies out there that are also not worth a dime, especially looking from a biblical perspective, which we not only watch once, but love, laughing louder each time we see them.
I think when it comes down to family- a parent would need to be careful in considering whether or not to take their child to this movie. Something, though, we can consider is our present society isn't christian and children will most definitely become exposed to athiesm at even earlier ages. If one's child enjoys fantasy than why not see the movie and talk about it with them afterwards. My dad always talked to me about the media I was exposed to as a small youth- and even though I do not entirely agree with all his views I'm glad he allowed me to watch what I did and engaged me in ideas that made me think at an early age.
And as for older people interested in fantasy, I don't see any reason why they shouldn't see this film. We are old enough to not be as easily swayed by entertainment and to critically question its message. Furthermore, I don't think it's always a good idea to cut off from obviously non-christian art, but to engage in conversation with others who see it. Movies like this allow people afterwards to open up about their world views. Maybe to go see The Golden Compass with a non-christian friend would open up a ministry oppurtunity.
And with all that said, like Harry Potter is, the movie a work of fiction. And what is seen in fiction is art, not always to be taken in a literal regard. I think fiction should be judged on artistic content.
But then again, it might not be worth the buck in many cases.
Thanks for engaging us in the conversation.

Janelle,
Thanks for your comment. You are right on about the fact that many movies don't glorify God and we enjoy those. I choose this one because it seems to be such a hot topic.
I agree that Christians can see this movie and not be "in sin." I think however a parent can explain the wrongs of movies and media without showing it to them. I will certainly warn my children of the dangers of homosexuality and premarital sex without having them watch "Broke Back Mountain."
As you said we should be talking to our non-Christian friends about it. And as far as fantasy goes, I am on board. I have read all the Harry Potter books and enjoyed them very much (I prefer the Chronicles of Narnia).
My personal convictions about this particular movie stem from the fact that based on the research I have done, spark notes, etc. These books get darker each time. I personally would like to see it fail so we don't have a sequel. But those are personal convictions.
If a believer watches this are the sinning? No way. And we can rest easy because we know God uses all things for His Glory! Think about how many people might watch this film and engage in a conversation with a friend that leads them to the Lord. That is my prayer anyway.
"See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ." Colossians 2:8
